  1. The Mediterranean sea is an inland sea 
  2. separating Europe from North Africa, with 
  3. Asia to the East. Extreme length 3,700km 
  4. (2,300miles), area 2,966,000sq km 
  5. (1,145,000sq miles). It is linked to the 
  6. Atlantic Ocean (at the Strait of Gibraltar), 
  7. Red Sea, and Indian Ocean (by the Suez 
  8. Canal), Black Sea (at the Dardanelles and Sea 
  9. of Marmara). The main subdivisions are the 
  10. Adriatic, Aegean, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian 
  11. seas. It is highly polluted.
